Cara's Commentary & Community Chat, Tues., Apr. 14, 2009

[8:58am ET] I will be watching closely today as the President speaks about the economy. Will he appear Presidential or will he, once again, act like he is America’s soon-to-be savior?

I think most people are beginning to say ‘Save us the speeches, give us jobs and food and an end to the corruption in Washington and on Wall Street’. These things are do-able, but all the talk in the world is not going to get the job done.

The workers will get the job done. They always do. But, where is the plan the people can buy into and start to put to work?

[8:06am ET] Now that this is earnings season, the story of the week, I believe, will be the close scrutiny of the leading banks that will be demanded by US taxpayers. People are angry over the lack of full disclosure coming from Humungous Bank & Broker, and they are demanding much greater transparency with respect to TARP, TALF and stress tests, plus independent investigation possibly leading to prosecution.

Week in Review #15, 2009

[10:16am ET] I regret having to miss a couple weeks of the Week In Review, for several reasons, not the least of which is that I do this report for myself too, as it forces me to study the big picture of the global capital market. Once I am away from the trenches, it usually takes me as long as I have been away to get my groove back. I don’t care whatever the endeavor; every professional needs a regimen of daily practice to stay on top of their game.

[9:12am ET] Stocks soared after the firing of the 3pm gun. There was a lot more talk than volume though.

In corporate news yesterday, Pulte Homes (PHM) agreed to buy rival Centex (CTX) for $1.3 billion, which had a positive market impact. The merged company will be America’s largest house-builder.

[6:55am ET] Re possible changes in organizing the Discourse, the posting yesterday from this community is itself a study in sociology worthy of a doctorate thesis. The word phenomenon comes to mind every day I scroll through these posts.

I think back almost five years when I started this blog and Forbes and Barron’s were saying that I must be eccentric and questioning why I was blogging. Well, I have said this from the beginning, I am like you; we all put our pants on same way. We all need to learn and the best way is to share.

[7:25am ET] I have two insights into the minds of the leaders of Humungous Bank & Broker (HB&B) that I’d like to share today: (i) they know they have done wrong and are now taking protective measures, and (ii) with no depression experience or scholarly knowledge of the depression, their skills could be matched by any college sophomore, and they are quiet about this because they are in denial -- having nightmares of being discovered as having few relevant skills for what they are humungously compensated for.
