Great interview aired during game of underdog Jeremy Lin

Mark Zuckerberg was also sitting right behind the Knicks bench. The Knicks beat the defending champion Dallas Mavericks on national tv today.
    J. Lin 28 Pts, 4 Reb, 14 Ast, 5 Stl, 1 Blk
But was a great overall team effort. Especially on defense.

    http://es.pn/z2MnVE

I take great inspiration as being a successful trader long term is prob harder than becoming a professional athlete.
    ==========================================================================

Wow, what a game. Jeremy's high school coach was there. Spike Lee wore Jeremy's Harvard jersey. Mr. Lin is the real catalyst to spur a successful financial year for both the Knickerbockers & Madison Square Gardens. Any point guard in the league would be proud of his stats.

Something I haven't seen in a long time. Before the game began, players were greeting each other with big smiles, expressing genuine happiness to be together, sharing something special. That's what "In pursuit of happiness" means.

Great effort by both teams & either could have won in the last seconds. To me, this game was more about a wildcard, chemistry & luck. It wasn't just Mr. Lin, although he was great. The Knicks inserted a player that was playing in China only days before. He hadn't even practiced with the team. That player, J.R. Smith, came in and began by knocking down 3 pointers. The team could run no plays, as the new guy didn't know them. Basically, an unrehearsed, take what the defense gives you and help each other be successful. Kind of what I think this blog is about.

Thanks for the help & sharing everyone.

Re: Great interview aired during game of underdog Jeremy Lin

Yeh it was a big win for the Knicks against defending champions. the thing that stood out was team defense and bench player Novak erupting in the 4th qtr.

    SP500 is incredibly cheap

when measured per gallons of gasoline (attached).

No doubt it will go up. The question is whether SP500 will go up or gasoline down?

    dollar rolling over?

I think it's a possibility. Especially considering super bearish sentiments toward euro.

I agree it is a refreshing phenom. While ur at it, keep an eye on the rangers, they seem to have something going and could be a cup contender. Marion Gaborik is a star.

    Re: WIR detail

    tradylady,

Thanks for the error report. I have now fixed the error that had been caused when going to a server I no longer use (at least for that purpose).

btw, I referred in the WIR to a new technical indicator data system. The Daily, Weekly and Monthly data comes directly from Investertech onto my server where I have a proprietary charting application that gives me about 1500 charts a day using this data. For intra-day data, I will be using ADVFN.

In fact, with ADVFN, we are going to introduce a streaming desk-top info system based on the Cara 100 price monitors and company news plus charts and running commentary from me.

    Live coverage Greek debt talks

"The solution to Greece's financial problems could lay at the bottom of the sea," said conservative party leader Antonis Samaras today.
On a visit to Cyprus he said Greece should follow the island's example and search for offshore mineral deposits. After talks with Cypriot President Dimitris Christofias, he suggested a "joint strategy" on potential offshore mineral deposits could be formed between Greece and Cyprus:
Greece's goal and purpose must be to capitalise on this wealth that exists beneath its seas which we must exploit at whichever cost, especially during such difficult economic times.

Re: Live coverage Greek debt talks

Athan - "The solution to Greece's financial problems could lay at the bottom of the sea"

So since the Germans are not coughing up the cash the way they used to, now it is offshore oil & gas that will be the next proposed Deux Ex Machina that will pull the Greeks out of their predicament, without anyone having to make any sacrifices or change how they do business.

Its a pity it actually takes 5-7 years to bring one of those wells online, once a discovery is made. But perhaps the electorate won't notice this and they'll vote for the clever Mr Samaras.

Its a Greek version of "Drill Baby Drill" - in this case, out of debt.

    Recommended book

I have been reading Gretchen Morganson's Reckless Endangerment. Gretchen is the New York Times Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who, I believe, is second to none among Wall Street writers. I continuously put the knock on mainstream media generally, but at the same time I envy her professionalism. If you truly want to know why the financial system collapsed in 2008 and who the people were that brought it down, and how they did it, read her book.

If you never again want to experience such a catastrophe, vote for the return of Glass-Steagall, introduction of the flat tax, and the elimination of public-private partnerships involving Wall Street and Washington.

Been short the Euro since this am

And the NQ, while i dont have a position now, has crept back to the 2586 price level i mentioned Friday. its where sellers and buyers have most agreed on price for the near term.

but things can change quick with this Greek thing

Re: Been short the Euro since this am

You`d think by now, after two years and 8 days of struggling with `this Greek thing,` they`d have a clear idea of the numbers involved. Yet when you read this below, it looks like they just started hitting calculator keys:

(GR) Details from Troika debt sustainability report suggest the imposed austerity measures will sink Greece into a recession so deep, it would prohibit recovery to levels consistent with "debt sustainability" - FT
    - Even with the more positive scenario, the austerity measures still may not keep Greece out of a recession, which could be so bad that Greece will not be able to get out of the debt even with the new €170B bailout.
    - Best case scenario country will need at least €50B on top of the €130B in new funds.
    - Recapitalization of the Greek banking sector (originally was projected to cost €30B) will now cost €50B.
    - Greek privatization plan (expected to raise €50B) will now be delayed by 5-years and bring in only €30B by the end of the decade.
    - Greece may need prolonged financial support.
    - A "tailored downside scenario" prepared for EU leaders in the report suggests Greek debt could fall far more slowly than hoped to 160% of GDP by 2020 v 120% target set by the IMF. Under this scenario Greece would need €245B in bailout aid. - Greece, Netherlands and Finland are not on board for second round of bailout funds.

Re: Been short the Euro since this am

close my euro short at gain. not sticking around for this mess

Re: Been short the Euro since this am

I re-shorted @1.3285. The news release regarding greece could basically be a re-print from various previous "Done deals" Already in profit so setup a profitable stop loss point.

I'll adjust my tgt when i wake up.

Tough loss for knicks. not sure how you can defeat the defending champs one night and lose to a horrible team the next.

Re: Been short the Euro since this am

A deal has supposedly been reached.

I'm going to hazard a guess that the Troika report will be used as justification to torpedo the deal as we get closer to the date when the cash will need to appear.

Perhaps that's the motivation behind the Troika report in the first place. Before, they had orders to report positive news. Now that the eurozone banks are ready to handle a default (and the northern europeans really don't want to give any more money to Greek bondholders), they have orders to report negative news. Surprise surprise, things don't look so good anymore. Who would have guessed that severe cutbacks in government spending would have negative economic consequences?

It has always been about the bondholders. Now the time has come to cut them off the gravy train. Even though a "deal has been done", we have 30 days from now until the money needs to appear. Just about anything could derail the train. "More democracy" in Germany. Or Finland. Or wherever.

Re: Been short the Euro since this am

    Vadichka,
Suppose we population adjust the 170 billion Euro (220 billion dollar) bailout for a country with 11 million souls against the U.S. with 300 million driviling idiots. Since our population is 27 times that of Greece, the equivilent bailout applied here would equal close to 6 TRILLION smackaroons...

Finland objects? Urrah for them. I recollect that the Finns were the ONLY COUNTRY to pay back in full their WWII debts.

Greece should quickly adopt the Icelandic model, thumb their noses at uber- europa and get back to fishing and fleecing tourists. I'm sure the great Greek diaspora would be tickled Agean pink to buy villas at 30 Drachma on the Euro.

Moving right along to Spain. When will they consolidate the debts of their regional governments and come clean with a consolidated balance sheet? Spain is the pay-ote chomping Enron of the EU!!!

While I'm on my high horse, it apprears that VW and Peugot as well as Siemens and others are BANKS just like GM and GE here in Amerika and are considering taking down oodles of that 1% honey money from the next turbo traunche of LTRO's. If there is a trillion offered, the bid will be 10 trillion.

How does one shame a corporation? As one wag recently wrote "I'll believe that a corporation is a person when Texas executes one."

God help us when the peasants finally realize that a toaster oven financed from a bank at 8% is more ulilitarian investment than their fuzzy wuzzy money earning zip on deposit...anywhere. Austrian economic types will term this as a "crack-up boom." It will perforce become M times V with a lazy 8 infinity sign.

I guess we must just laugh and 'endevour to perservere' til the end game becomes more clear.

Re: Been short the Euro since this am

    Endeavor to perservere.

Re: Been short the Euro since this am

Thank you for the top mixed metaphor quotes of delight today, Ilya.

"Spain is the pay-ote chomping Enron of the EU!!!"

"I'll believe that a corporation is a person when Texas executes one."

AAPL got a date with Fibonacci & Robert Nadeau

Spent a weekend with Robert Nadeau and I see the AAPL debate continuing yesterday, so I'll tie the two together.

Shihan sensei was very much for the present, the here and now and he made much distinction between the mind or intellectual "I" against the body as a system. An easily understandable example would be the intellectual engagement required as a teenager learning to drive a car - call him/her a level 1 driver - whereas most of us have a unified mind/body system that can drive us from A to B almost without thinking - maybe level 2 or 3 (and no, it is not a coincidence that I paraphrase Vad's MPP for this example). Think of a NASCAR driver as a level 4 or 5 driver. The following vid provides an example of 'endless possibilities' that we face almost daily in our driving, without really thinking about it, as it applies to Aikido.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfJm2Ff04b4

It's not like most of us encounter that sort of "Oh my god!" experience daily on the road anymore, we just do it. That sort of endless possibility is what I seek to acquire in both Aikido and trading.

On AAPL, first thing I was reminded of in returning to that same chart was that long-term charts should ideally be logarithmic. In the arithmetic setting used for that chart, we've the impression that the stock is parabolic, whereas the long-term logarithmic or percentage-wise moves illustrate a more realistic appraisal of where AAPL is right now. In returning to the AAPL chart and not seeing the same thing as the first time, I realised my error. See attached.

It wasn't my intention to say "the market is rolling over here" in noting the fib resistance, it was just an observation that this magical mathematics formula was likely to provide resistance here. Having a look at daily as we head into the new trading week, I note the presence of here and now that seasoned traders like Geoff clearly displayed on the day. A gap up break of daily bollinger bands is clear energy that a seasoned trader can sell into, before the reversal candle on heavy volume establishes itself. This is Aiki that I can admire.

The here and now is clearly illustrated on the attached daily chart; the trader who anticipates and sells into that spike of buying energy is clearly rewarded for their presence. But I wasn't suggesting the market was going to die here. I require an understanding of possibilities for short-term intraday trading direction and as Bill remarked "It’s hard to beat the market when AAPL is such a big part of it, but careful trading can help." The attached daily chart illustrates that possibility quite clearly. With printy, printy, spend, spend taxpayers money being the order of the day in Europe, I certainly would not think of shorting AAPL here, except intraday (if it was my strategy to do so, which is not the case).

Speaking of short-term direction, I like the XLE bearish divergence in the 60 min chart as potential intraday shorting opportunity, having noted Bill's potential for topping action in the WIR. This little pop at resistance in crude futures is something to follow up in equities today. I'll keep an eye on the usuals RIG, SLB etc.

TCK was my best setup Friday. I note the potential for support to be kicking in for some of these commodity players. TCK seems a two way possibility at this moment. Lose that 50 MA support and it could elicit stronger selling. Something I'll watch, along with XLB.

    ALOHA!!

"I'll believe that a corporation is a person when Texas executes one."

In the case of the Texas #1 Most Wanted - ENRON - It would have been nice to at least see a poster in the post office or even ENRON on death row, but then that would have extended ENRON's life expectancy another 20 years on appeals! I prefer how ENRON was "executed" in the market place by "hanging" as ECTPQ.PK on the pink sheets is at $0.01USD! Still if "Kenny Boy"(CEO Ken Lay as GW called him)was alive today his 20mil shares would still buy a nice Ferrari even at $0.01! You could say Kenny executed himself ... I wonder where Jeffrey Skilling is these days?

    "Trail of tears" indeed ...

    LENDING SHARES ASX STYLE

    ALOHA!!

This is an interesting inside look at how Macquarie Group Limited(MQG:ASX)takes the shares of Silver Lake Res(SLR:ASX) and lends them out. To be fair part of it discloses open market buys and sells. You have to scroll a lot to find the "lending section"(starts pg 20) that is buried in the docu-drama! Form 604 disclosure is a total of 183 pages long full of all the contractual legalese! The file is in two parts it is so huge. Consider there are three major banking entities involved as we have JP Morgan Chase, Deutsche Bank and Morgan Stanley.

Right off the bat I have issue with Macquarie's declaration that somehow 66,000+ shares equals 1% of SLR voting power as shown on the first page, especially since the shares are registered FPO.

Note the many unsuspecting US share holders who were affected, but probably did not even know it either through pension funds, mutuals or their brokerage. I mean the list is truly global! It does look like some of the shorts got caught short on the "D-R" prices.

I defer to section 5.1 which states the "fee" cost and its calculation, however the actual fee amount is never disclosed. Naturally the true legal shareholder never received a fee, as they only purchased the shares with their hard earned labor wages! Hey, all in a "nano-seconds" work for HB&B! MAUS KLIX-R-US!

This link is for part one which is 140 pages long ...

    SLR UPDATE

    ALOHA!!

The latest SLR Corporate Presentation from the RIU Explorer's Conference held in Fremantle, Western Australia.

rats. my stop was hit for a small gain. could have made some nice cheese. resetting my eyes

    Re: SLR UPDATE

    Hello Kaimu,

I have recently joined the board but have not seen you here for a while.

I realise you have followed SLR from a very junior low market cap to a rapidly growing profitable company.

Truly an investment rather than speculation in junior exploration and mining.

In 2012 I have tried to regroup my thoughts from what was a tough 2011 on the Canadian markets by writing a blog, linked here over a few previous days, trying to identify themes, people and companies which might allow more of us to find the success in the junior market you clearly have.
Even the price chart of SLR is very different from the Canadian juniors, with a low in July but strength through the October and December lows many of us saw.
Did the shorting you point to have clear effect on price?

Other than that I would be very grateful to hear your thoughts on the themes to follow in identifying successful investments in a sector which I feel offers tremendous value if we can find the right management teams, properties and company positioning to invest in.
I would love your thoughts on what I might try to achieve on the blog which is put up to try to direct the lay investor away from the brutal pumps and speculations towards the quality people I believe (hope) are around the junior exploration and mining industry.
