Post for testing comments

This post is just so people can test posting comments without cluttering other comment threads. This will be the only post that allows comments at the beginning, until we've transitioned to this site completely. The site admin will keep an eye on this thread, so if there are any problems or help requests, you may post those here as well.

First comment

Here is a comment to kick things off. Notice that there is a "subject" field now -- it's mostly useful because it makes it a little easier to keep track of replies to comments. We ended up keeping the flat comment system from the old BillCara.com, but there is support for replying to specific posts, and the reply's subject will indicate by default what comment it is a reply to. There is also a link to the replied-to comment. As a result, if your comment IS NOT a reply to anything specific, please just use the "Post new comment" form at the bottom of the page, but if it IS a reply, use the reply button below that comment.

Otherwise, just play around here and let me know if there are any bugs or problems. Thanks!

Second Comment

Great to see the new site up. RSI tool is great and archives a bonus. Jeff you have done a great job.

-----

This is the edit function in use after posting my comment. No changes made, but great to see I can add more details to a previous response.

newcomer

Haven't posted before but have enjoyed following the site over the last year. Its my first read every morning. Thanks Bill and all who contribute.

Re: Second Comment

Yes FredC it is a nice feature, but also see the "Chat Posting Basics" under Site Index, WebSite Help. The edit feature is only available when there has been no reply to your original post, once there are any replies, even your own, you will not be able to edit the original post. You will be able to see this now as I have replied to your post, it will now be locked.

On busy days with lots of posts you may not really have any time at all to edit a post, best practice is still to preview and check before posting.

Re: Test Post

Mackinaw,

Contrary to what the help might say, I actually disabled the ability to post images directly in the comments. I let people attach files to their comments so they can share images/spreadsheets/etc, but I was afraid that people might post inappropriate images or advertisements, so I didn't want them to display without someone explicitly clicking on them. I will consider lifting that restriction in the future, however.

Jeff

Re: Test Post

I like that attachment option - with the cooliris addon to Firefox it can be almost inline with the comment. FXI looks like its ready to take off upside, were it not for the stochastics getting up there. Any thoughts - I'm fairly new to using stochastics.

Alas, being a founding member of DENSA, I took literally the requirement to create a new id!

Rules

I'm a little bothered by the rule about penny stocks - some of my favorite gold juniors are currently in that category, and I think good value. e.g. I'm long Capital Gold, a profitable producer - shall I now be tarred and feathered for mentioning it? Perhaps a little more precision in the rule could help - I'm not interested in promoting anything, and like everyone else in the community, I do my own DD and expect others to do theirs.

Looks nice. Really

Looks nice. Really appreciate the enhanced search function.

I'm just wondering if it's possible for me to change my id/user name without registering? I wanted to give myself the handle I use on the soon-to-be-old caracommunity thread--4theFuture--if some site admin wants to just go ahead and change it for me, I won't object!

Re: Looks nice. Really

I decided to give users the permission to change their own user names (I might turn it off later once things have settled to avoid confusion). Go to http://caracommunity.com/user and click on edit. It will give you an option to change your user name there.

Oh, and FYI, the search system will get better in the next few weeks. The built-in search is ok, but I hear if I install an updated search program it will be much nicer.

Looks good

A litle more complicated, but some of the tools right at hand and nice to have picture and be able to save certain posts. Bill looks so serious with a tie!

RSI tool

When i click this it redirects this window to the tool instead of opening the tool in a new window. I might like to keep both windows open. Is this a setting on my explorer options under advanced or is it the way the site is set up?

Re: RSI tool, open in new Tab / Window

To open in a new window or tab in FireFox, just right click (instead of left) on the link and you will have those options. IE6 has the same option of "open in new window" and IE7 I believe also gives you the "open in new Tab" option.

New Site looks clean, nice

Hopefully I won't get lost with the new digs. I was quite used to the old site.
I also like the overall "green" look - to remind of green arrows on my positions!!
Keep up the good work.

Cheers

Avatar photos to appear?

Jeff,

I added a photo to go with my profile. Will it appear alongside my posts?

Also,

Perhaps an option to indicate what part of the world you're from on the user profile page, along with a page/map to tabulate running totals of worldwide users by region?

Nothing of value (testing subject line)

Sweet. I like the upgrade. Looking fwd to it.

One comment is that i see a lot of white space. Between lines, comments, etc. It might be better to tighten that up to save on the scrolling, and to maximize screen real estate.

[edit]
THIS is great! Love the edit feature! but the fact i can now bookmark people and just go to track their comments is wildly productive! Can i buy a call option on the number of people who are going to bookmark and track Kaimu's posts?

Maybe a part 2 would be highlight comments made by my bookmarked people, while i scroll and read the daily discourse.

Simply awesome!

Re: Rules

I talked to Bill, and we may rephrase that rule in the future. His opinion is that if you've done extensive due diligence on a speculative stock and wish to share it, that's fine. The rule is more in place to avoid stock manipulation through the commentary here. For now, just keep in mind that we'll be judicious in enforcing that rule, and that people who have a track record with us are unlikely to get more than a warning unless it is really blatant.

Re: Avatar photos to appear?

I've decided to skip avatar photos in the commentary for now just to save space and bandwidth (since the commentary can get so long, it could be a problem). I may change in the future.

I'll certainly consider letting people add locations to their profile. I think that would be a worthwhile feature. I haven't really done much with the user profiles, so if there are any more suggestions let me know!

I hope Bill & Co can track edits made?

For obvious reasons, someone who says one thing but changes their story whether with bad or good intentions and consequences, will Bill and admins be able to track comments and their diff versions with time stamps?

Re: Nothing of value (testing subject line)

I removed sidebars because my testers said it made the screen too cramped, but I also increased paragraph spacing because some said it was hard to read the old way (I also increased the font, because the default was pretty small). I may do a little tweaking to find a happy medium.

The bookmarking features were all based on what I thought would make the site more usable. Some people don't have time to read all the comments, but want to be able to pick out a few people -- hence bookmarking people. New people may not have a clue where to find value, so they can look in the "most popular" (aka, most bookmarked) posts and comments section to get an idea of the higher quality material on the site.

Highlighting bookmarked users and even having a page with comments from ALL your bookmarked users, perhaps complete with it's own RSS feed, are all ideas that I'm looking to implement over time.

Re: I hope Bill & Co can track edits made?

Currently it is difficult, but possible (note that the Skype integration actually does provide a history if we need it). If someone replies to a comment, it becomes locked for editing, so that should prevent some abuse (a comment that could cause problems will likely get replies). If we find that it is a problem, there is an add-on I can install, but it's not stable just yet.

AVATOR is a problem otherwise OK

Looks good. It would be good to have an avator however.

Re: Avatar photos to appear?

Jeff,

yeah just the basics - what country/state/or even what city the person lives in (up to personal preference - I realize that some people will choose to remain anonymous). Also the option to state what the person does for a living and their age. I would suggest that the fields were not displayed unless that person chooses to fill them

e.g.: Bob/Los Angeles,California, USA/Real Estate Broker/42

but not: Bob/(decline to state),(decline to state), USA/(decline to state)/(decline to state)

The main point of my suggestion is the global map showing where everyone is. I'm really curious to see breadth of the readership of this blog.

Re: Avatar photos to appear?

Ok, you got me interested. I haven't implemented all of what you said, but let's see how this works.

Go to http://caracommunity.com/user and click on 'Edit'. That will give you an option to set a location for your user account (make it as vague as you want). Then you can go to http://caracommunity.com/map/user and see everyone who has submitted a location on a map.

Right now I just show a marker where everyone is -- I can make it so it will show WHO each marker is, if I decide that isn't a big privacy problem. But I'll start "safe" for now and omit that detail.

Let me know what you think.

Re: Avatar photos to appear?

Jeff,

That's what I'm talkin' 'bout.

Now, how about a link on the front page that leads to "Cara Global Community Map"?

Re: Avatar photos to appear?

I added a link on the right side bar on the main page. Happy?

Start of new vs old site

Are we all supposed to start using this site vs billcara.com immediately starting with tomorrow's WIR?

Re: Start of new vs old site

The WIR will show up on both sites. If I don't see any major bugs this weekend, I will probably disable comments on the old blog and enable them on the new blog while keeping posts on both for a while for those who are either using old RSS addresses or who just take a while to adjust.

Re: Rules

That was the general sense of the rule I envisioned. Yrs ago I bought eld.to at .25c so some of these companies have and are selling for pennies for reasons regardless of fundamentals. I currently have two penny stocks(explorers) that I am concerned about and would really like to hear comments and especially criticisms. I am not sure if I am being foolish holding onto them for so long.I'll just call them x and y as they are jt ventured on the property next door to the Gold eagle mines property which Goldcorp bought for 1.4b this summer after Agnico Eagle stepped in with a purchase of 50m worth of Gold Eagle mines.Nearly 2 yrs ago Goldcorp bought over 9% of x at .65 so they clearly have an interest, and most recently gg allowed x to bring a drill onto their newly aquired gold eagle mines property to drill at an angle into x's property. I am not very good at doing dd but the property map shows the broolan channel discovery by Gold eagle running directly towards x and y's property. So I thought it would be pretty difficult for the gold to stop at the fenceline with the gea discovery being shaped like a channel running in that direction? I thought gg's buyout would have generated some excitement for x and y but the sp has gone to .19 cents since gg bought 9% for .65 nearly 2 yrs ago ? So maybe I am missing something or is it just the state of the jr market? I am so broke now I may have to sell some of both just to attempt to pay some bills. They also announced a pp lst week which worries me,why do these stocks fall so hard and then announce a pp despite any good news on the way down? Is that manipulation of the price to get their comrades in on the pp at a cheap price? Any thoughts appreciated.

Great job on the site! Very clean and easy to use.

Vote on Comments

Would be great if we could vote on comments. i.e. if the comment is interesting and useful
we would vote it up, vote down otherwise.

thanks,

New Style etc

Jeff,
The site looks great. I like the new (larger) font, the edit function, the color change between posts and especially the bookmarking feature. I do agree with NYU's comment that there is a lot of white space but perhaps that is the trade off for easier readability.
I'm not sure what we do to deserve such great work from Bill and his organization but we certainly appreciate having such a valuable resource available to us.
Thanks.

Zooming issues

When I zoom, increasing the size of the page on Internet Explorer, the web page no longer fits the size of the screen and I loose alot of text and the side content disappears.

Changing text size

I just want to follow up my last post and point out that I am unable to change the text size using Internet Explorer.

On board

Korvus, I like all the new features, especially bookmarking. Is is possible to further organize bookmarks with tags such as bull market, gold stocks, oil, charting, fiat currency, technical strategies, options, etc?

Also, How about an events page, and anything else particularly special, like the party at Bill's in April, so people don't have to go wading thru to look for details.

I'm excited that this new format could well facilitate a higher trading IQ in this community.

US Economic Calendar

I always enjoy this link that is posted in daily report and refer to it often. For me (thinking selfishly) it would be nice to have quick link at top of this page next to RSI tool.

Re: Changing text size

JimG, what version of IE are you using ??

I'm not seeing the web page increase beyond the screen on IE6. Now I can't change the font size without going into Internet options, General, bottom of page, Accessibility, then check off "Ignore font sizes specified on Web pages". Then I can adjust the size by using the text sized selections under the
"View" menu.

I'm out for a while but will check IE7 on the other drive later today.

Note normal browser is FireFox 3, which allows zooming with the scroll wheel and the graphics also zoom, simply the best.

Re: Changing text size

JimG, I'm with Quasi - Firefox is definitely the way to go. I can increase text size using [CNTRL]+ and reduce it with [CNTRL]-, and it all adjusts nicely, no annoying horizontal scrolling.

Better browser ---> Google Chrome

I recently switched to Google Chrome. its quite nice!
http://www.google.com/chrome/

Re: Changing text size

I am using IE7. On Bills old site I could zoom to 150 with no problem (all the text would remain within the screen)

Re: Changing text size

Thanks Chris and Quasi. I am hoping Korvus has a fix on his end.

Re: Vote on Comments

This was suggested early on and there was some resistance to "ranking" comments. I figured the bookmark feature was a close second -- if a comment is really worthwhile, it will get bookmarked by multiple people. Eventually I may come up with a list of "users with the most comments bookmarked" also, though I'm not sure what the calculation would be there.

Re: On board

Currently, there isn't a way to organize bookmarks that way and with the bookmark interface that would really clutter the comments (it would have a link to bookmark it under each category). On my to-do list is having a way to tag comments (either done by the author or the community) with those kinds of labels, and when that happens I'll see if I can let people filter the bookmark list by those tags/labels.

Events page is a good idea. I'll add that to the list.

Re: US Economic Calendar

I may add that economic calendar link. I need to flesh out the menus some more, so I'll consider that in my thought process.

Re: Changing text size

I remember reading about this... I think by giving font sizes in certain units, IE can't handle resizing the text. Let me see if I can change it without having to re-do every font size on the site.

(edit)
I think it may work now. Could you try resizing the font in IE7 and let me know if it works? I don't think everything will change, but the important text should...

Re: Changing text size

Yes, I am now able to resize the font size using IE7. Zoom is not working as on the old site. Thankyou Korvus

Re: Changing text size IE7

Jeff, JimG

Did a little Google search on the IE7 Zoom and text size issue. Found it is quite a well known problem and they are working on a fix that will come out in IE8, in theory they will make it work like FireFox3.

Jeff I fired up IE7 on my other drive and the problem is still there, maybe changed a little not sure. The best workaround I can see now is for users to allow their IE7 browser to adjust text sizes. The default setting is to use the website fonts and sizes but you can change that. Go to "Tools" > "Internet Options" > "Accessibility" > check the box "Ignore font sizes specified on web pages", then save accept OK. This will allow you to change the text sizing under "Page button" open the "Text Size" menu and select. Seems to work well for my test.

Let us know how it works, thanks

some questions

I like the new design--great photo of you Bill! Also, happy to see the eye isn't there anymore--too Wall Streetish for my taste. It's amazing to see how this blog has evolved, though I also miss some of the old posters like tradesman and Leisa. Bill, I was wondering about an idea you had, if I remember correctly, for those who do not have $50,000 to leave with you under management(though that would be my first choice). I believe there was the possibility of setting up an account, say with Interactive Brokers, and getting trading advice from you. In effect it would be a self-managed account but your advice would come with a monthly fee? I hope I have this right. Anyone else care to comment?

chart posting test

I have an account at stockcharts.com and have been trying different methods to post charts here (using preview). So far, no luck. Stockcharts provides a simple method for posting charts on forums, but it does not seem to work here. It looks like one has to download a chart to your own computer and then upload it using the attachments option. If that's the only way, it's too much work. Any other ideas out there? Maybe I'm missing something.

Stockcharts

Worked ok. Just click Linkable Version, copy the address and go to

Re: chart posting test

I rarely use Stockcharts, so if you can give me some more information I might be able to help. I do know that Stockcharts sometimes uses symbols in the URL that prevent it from automatically being detected as a link here, so if you are trying to post a link, you probably need to use HTML form: <a href="http://somesite.com/blah">this is a link</a>

If you are trying to post an image directly (via an <IMG> tag), I currently don't allow that. People can post images that are too big, obscene, etc, and I think it's best to make people attach image files for those reasons. Also linked images may go away at some point, but if you attach it to a comment, we have it archived.

Ignored Users

Jeff - It would be nice if it there was an option to delete completely all references to remarks made by ignored users--including the fact that they had posted something, the title of that post, etc. ~ OG

Re: Ignored Users

Personally, I like the ability to see that an ignored user posted (one reason is that it prevents people from accidentally hitting ignore and then not realizing they are missing someone's comments). That said, right now an ignored users's post takes up a surprising amount of screen space. I would love to see that come down to one line. Would that help?

Re: Just got first script error message...

No worries, I've seen it myself. I think there's just too much javascript running on the site and when you try to do something else occasionally the web browser decides it is taking too long. Step one was getting a reasonably feature-complete site -- step two will involve improving performance.

Re: type size - readability

I agree that the font and the line spacing seems too small. It is, to my eyes, not so inviting to look at, and more difficult to read than the old site, particularly since the lines are much wider (lots of words to read in a single line). Maybe it's a different type of font (and size)?

Also, when the title of the post is multiline, the second line is touching th first one. I am using IE6 and FF3.x.

Edit: I have attached a screen capture of the old site and the new site. It's the character (space between chars) and line spacing! (at least)

Market data streaming

Just throwing out a question here.

I'm in the process of creating an investor portal to South America. Currently we try to provide information on what goes on in Chile, Argentina, Peru and Brazil. My address is incainvest.com

What I'm struggling with now is figuring out how to get access to market data. I've emailed Santiago Stock Exchange ten times, but still haven't been able to figure out how this works. Since it's public data, should it be possible to get access to this stuff for free? Or does each exchange have a fee based service for redistribution of data?

In the case of Argentina/Brazil/Chile, any ideas on where I should start and what I should expect?

Browser Hang

I don't know what to do about this nagging problem except to live with it, or maybe enable/disable some feature(s) in FF3?

Re: Browser Hang

As an experiment, I switched for the time being to Google's Chrome. Being a beta, it may be a little rough around the edges but for basic browsing needs it's great so far. No hanging and, fairly important for me with a lot of applications running, takes about 30-40% less memory. Maybe try it without making it your default browser for now?

Re: Browser Hang

Chrome is an excellent option for this problem, as they have one of the fastest Javascript engines around.

I'm still working on this, but I've dealt with the "low hanging fruit" already, so progress will be a little slow. I need to run everything through a Javascript profiler to see what functions are causing the most trouble.

Re: Too bad Chrome does not run

Google uses a bunch of undocumented OS features, so it was probably just too hard to back-port to Win2k.

Would there be a possibility to have a few more font size options? The large is too large and the small too small. Some people are never satisfied... Image capture attached. Thx.

Try some of the tricks and fixes under the "Site Index" > "Website Help" > "Known Issues and Fixes". I've tried most of the combination's on IE6, IE7 and FireFox3 and they do give you a little more control for specific requirements.

Just updated to include FireFox but I haven't heard anyone complain when using FF.

Quasi

Thanks Quasi. I use both IE6

Thanks Quasi. I use both IE6 and FF 3.04 to access the site, mainly FF I'd say. I guess I was looking at something like in the attached screen capture. I'd really not want to touch my browser settings, and even less so for other sites (which are just fine). Also, each site uses specific fonts to create its desired experience, really would not want to mess it up. Up to this point I don't know why multiline titles have one line on top of each other for me either.

Re: Thanks Quasi. I use both IE6

My home PC hard drive failed yesterday, so I'll be moving slowly for a few days. I can adjust the sizes I provide pretty easily, so maybe I'll do that tonight.

Honestly, IE8 should be out soon, and I'm hoping that will kill off IE6 for good. Even Microsoft has stopped trying to pretend that IE6 does things right, and has whole articles on their website about working around IE6 bugs. So I'm going to focus on IE7+ and FF appearance, unless something is unusable in IE6.

Re: Thanks Quasi - - SiO2 Zoom Text

SiO2,

I'm mostly running FF ver 3.03, I only use IE6 to check out problems people are having hear or to access things like Windows update which Mr.Softy will only let you do with IE, funny??

I let FF use website fonts and sizes as default, when I zoom a site to my liking FF remembers that setting and when I return to that URL domain it uses my last zoom setting. I like it as I use different zoom settings for different sites. (note if you don't want it to remember these settings per domain you can turn it off under about:config, I think its under browser zoom site-specific settings, just toggle to false.

I'm not sure why you are getting the subject line wrapping and then overlapping on itself, I don't get that and I can get the screen text up to quite large before I start to scroll off the screen and get the horizontal scroll bar. Sample shot of the largest I can get on my old 17 monitor running 1024X768 res.

The screen shot you posted is only about 750 px wide, I assume you are running at least 1024px screen width, thus I would change your site settings to use full width for posts, My Account, Edit, Site Settings.

Of course my machine, OS and settings are probably different than most, 5yr old homemade PC. I have never had the browser hang and don't have the overlap problems.

Re: Thanks Quasi, Hard Disc Failure

AAhh, the old hard disc failure thingy, been there done that a few times, real pain, probably the most frequent failure mode in PC's and the most devastating.

I think I pretty well eliminated that problem a few years ago. I run two separate hard discs in each PC (or accessible on my home network). I partition each disc with drives for OS, Data, Temp and Backup.

I then clone my OS disk to the alt drive and reclone every few months when things are running well. I also run a homemade DOS batch file each nite which copies just my data to my alt backup disc. Backups have to be automatic otherwise they won't be there when you really need them. To prevent a corruption problem being copied and overwriting my backup from last night, I keep 7 days of sequential backups, then I create a weekly (4 of those), then bumps to a monthly (2 of those) and then a manual copy every time I do a major clean up. I can always go back and find a previous version of a file, data or even something I deleted months ago.

If I get a hard disc crash or major corruption / virus, I just reboot and tell the bios to boot to the other drive (3 mins). If I have a mother board failure I can just pull a disc and drop it in another computer (30 mins, 15 mins if I never put the screws back in the other computer).

I'm also looking at getting an external drive next, won't be automated, you gotta plug it in, but won't suffer from lightening as long as its not plugged in. Also you should keep it in one of those fireproof boxes.

I know none of this will help you now but just some things to think about to make it easier in the future, and it will happen again, even solid state drives can crash.

Re: Thanks Quasi, Hard Disc Failure

Yeah, I've got some ideas already. While I lost a bunch of data, I had been testing out a backup product (CrashPlan - http://www.crashplan.com/ ) which I'd used to back up my most important stuff remotely just a few days earlier, so I think I'll survive. Too bad I didn't know a failure was coming, or else I would've scrutinized that list a little closer. :)

I think I'm going to pony up the $20 for a basic copy of CrashPlan, because I find it really convenient. While I home-brew a lot of solutions, CrashPlan just works. I mean, I backed up a bunch of data using rdiff-backup onto a server I use, but now I have no idea what I backed up or where because my backup script disappeared. Dumb, dumb, dumb!

My ideal plan is to re-haul my in-home server to run OpenSolaris using ZFS & RAID-Z or ZFS mirrors, and use that as my file server. I'll keep very little on my main PC, and back up what I do keep to that machine. Then I'll use CrashPlan to backup data off-site (and probably let myself be a backup host for friends & family using the same software). But we'll see if I ever get around to doing that...

Re: Thanks Quasi, Hard Disc Failure

Yes Jeff, I see you're getting ready, glad you had some of it backed up. I hope CrashPlan works out OK for you. I did check out the site and I like the fact that it encrypts the data, but its only for data, not your OS.

I see rdiff-backup does basically the same thing but without the encryption and the nice easy to use menus.

I've also thought of running redundant drives in a RAID format, great for a server you want to keep up and running but both drives will be useless if the system becomes corrupted or gets a virus.

I've had maybe 4 hard disc failures over the last 15 years, I had most of my data backed up (but not all) so I survived. What I hated was the full day or more it took me to format a new drive, re-install the OS, upgrade it, re-install all my programs, upgrade them, redo all of my settings (as best I could remember), etc etc.

With the clone drive of my OS and all programs I can be back up in the time it takes me to reboot. And with my auto batch file backup system I never loose any data and have multiple versions to go back to. I currently just use the free WD datalife tools to create the clone drive, takes about an hour, I do it manually every few months, depending on how much I've changed. The data back up is just a series of DOS batch files I auto schedule to run daily, then one weekly and one monthly. The following is an example of the daily batch file, pretty simple really, weekly and monthly batch files dovetail into this one, I think you'll get the idea.

I'm currently looking at some other disk imaging systems, I've used Norton Ghost in the past and had some problems. The gurus I deal with highly recommend Casper, $50, a little more expensive than CrashPlan but it does image the entire disk and will do incremental backups. When I build my new machine I think I'll go the Casper route. http://www.fssdev.com/ But I will also add a USB drive I can keep in a hidden fire box or some sort of remote system, just in case the house burns down or major a electrical surge wiping out both drives.

Just some other ideas to make life easier in the future, hope for the best but plan for the worst, that way life will always exceed your expectations.

Re: Thanks Quasi, Hard Disc Failure

I use Acronis True Image for backups, OS+applications+data, incremental. far from being a techie, just throwing one more in to consider

Re: Thanks Quasi, Hard Disc Failure

Yes Vadym, Acronis True Image would be my second choice, also highly recommended by the gurus I know personally and trust. An image clone is just the best way to go.

Is your backup external, in a fire box or off site?

Re: Thanks Quasi, Hard Disc Failure

Quasi, external harddrive. I am yet to become disciplined enough to keep it off site though...

Back Up Suggestions

I had provided Bill some ideas a year ago that still apply:

Use a backup program to store archives—copies of each file as it existed at many points in time—on one partition of an external hard disk. Update these archives incrementally (that is, only copying new or changed files each time) at least daily.

Software required: Mac: Time Machine or Data Backup 3, PC: Genie Backup Manager or similar; http://data-backup-software-review.toptenreviews.com/
Hardware required: One 500GB or larger (FW400/FW800/USB2) external hard drive.

Create a boot-able duplicate of your entire start-up volume on another partition of that same external hard disk, and update it regularly.

Software required: Mac: SuperDuper or Data Backup 3, PC: Acronis True Image
Hardware required: none, using same external hard drive as the archive.

Keep at least one backup copy of your important data somewhere safely away from your computer—in another building, at least, and perhaps even in another part of the world.

Hard drive option:
Hardware required: One additional 500GB (FW400/FW800/USB2) external hard drive.
Software required: No additional software required.
You will need to physically move the hard drive offsite and switch out with the other hard drive on a regular schedule.

Internet option:
Hardware required: none …. invite a friend or family member to host your backup, or use your laptop, or use any combination.
Software required: Crashplan
Recovery from this option is more time consuming than the hard drive option. If you choose one of these services, keep in mind the following:
You should not back up your entire disk online, because you won't be able to restore your entire system over the Internet anyway. Back up your home folder and other especially important files.
Even if you have a shockingly fast Internet connection, your initial backup can take days. Weeks even. It'll go much faster after that, when only new or changed data is being backed up.

cheers, doug

Backups

A lot of great suggestions here. An important thing to note is that I don't run Windows, so that would seem to rule out Casper and Acronis True Image. That's one reason I really like CrashPlan -- it runs on Windows, OS X, and Linux, so I can back up any of my systems on to any of my systems and it's transparent as to what OS the sending and receiving copy is on.

I have a 500 GB firewire drive that I back up to ocassionally (and my wife uses over the network), but I seem to have a habit of changing something that makes my backup script not run and then forgetting. Which is why I like having something a little more user-friendly.

I think with this crash, I lost a bunch of videos/music, and a bunch of useful-but-not-critical files like private SSH keys and program settings, but otherwise I think I'm ok. I have an old backup on my 500 GB firewire drive and I have a CrashPlan backup of my most important file from the last week actually sitting on the CaraCommunity.com server (which has mirrored hard drives, for extra protection).

I actually don't mind reinstalling the OS...but that may be because I run Linux. :) Yeah it takes a little while, but almost everything I run is in their software repository so it's mostly an issue of checking the boxes for what I need and then walking away for a while. It's also a good opportunity to upgrade since I'm using Ubuntu right now and they release a new version every 6 months (I've had mixed luck with upgrading from one version to another, so a fresh install is nice).

Since CrashPlan just added an option to backup files to an external HD, I think I'm just going to shell out $20 for the cheap version of CrashPlan, and use it to back up to both my external HD and somewhere on the network. If I can't get it to handle a different set of files for each, I might just manually rsync all my data to my external drive and CrashPlan the important stuff. I think my daughter's baby pictures deserve an off-site backup. :)

Unable to read Bill's Weekend Reviews

korvus,
Using FF. Still having a world of problems with the site - especially the Javascript. In particular, I haven't been able to read Bill's Saturday posts the last two weeks. I just get a blank page. Looking at the source, it's just truncated.

New Site

Long term lurker. Only one prev post.

Love the new site Korvus and many thanks for Bill giving you something to put in it.

I use all 4 browsers (Win XP) in order to proof several web sites I run. I love the Google chrome and use it most often but they still have some issues in the print module.

Re: Unable to read Bill's Weekend Reviews

What version of FF? What operating system? I almost exclusively use FF, and I haven't seen that problem, so I'd like to narrow it down. I'm running 3.04 on Linux right now and I can see it.

Also, if you get some part of the page when you view source, email it to me at jeff at billcara dot com. I'll see if I can figure out why it is stopping where it is.

The Javascript is an issue I've been running into, but I've had a tough time trying to figure out what the problem is. Now that I (kinda) have a computer again, I'll get back to trying to find that problem.

Thanks for the update.

ignore button

When I put that certain omnipresent poster on ignore, his posts remain with a line that he's on my ignore list and how to view the ignore list for each of his posts. Would it not be better to omit entirely those ignored messages (no reminder that they're there) in the thread? I don't need 40 reminders per day that he posted and can be taken off the ignore list!

I understand the sentiment. I do like letting people know that the post is there, because it reduces the odds of someone accidentally hitting ignore and then just mysteriously never seeing some posts (if you didn't mean to ignore someone but then see those warnings, it will let you know what happened).

What I would like to do, however, is make it so that those messages take up less space. One line that says "This is an ignored message by . Click here to see it." should be plenty. Right now ignored messages still take up quite a bit of screen real estate and they also show the subject, which probably isn't desirable.

If I made that change, would that be an improvement? Or is it important for you to simply not even know that user exists anymore?

Re: ignore button

Thanks for the response, korvus. If I had my druthers, I'd have the ignored user's post not appear in the thread but a prominent link elsewhere to 'ignored users' so I won't loose complete track of them. That rids the thread of riff-raff and doesn't remind me that the annoying poster still plagues the board.

[edit] I was thinking that perhaps people were having problems attaching files as maybe they weren't hitting the attach button after browsing to the file.

In the first case above I did not hit the attach button, but did a preview.

In the second case I did not hit the attach button, no preview, just right to save.

Both worked without any errors, so I'm still at a loss as to why some people are still having problems, must be browser and Java related I'm guessing.

Re: AZ

It tells you a stock may have reached the relative bottom of it's trading range, and depending on your trading strategy, as well as the total size of the position you wish to accumulate, this is an area where you would begin accumulating your position.
