[9:21am ET] All traders needed was to open their presents under the tree and Santa Claus would make everything all right, apparently. Since Xmas Eve, the S&P 500 has put in gains of +0.58%, +0.54%, +2.44%, +1.42% and yesterday’s +3.16%, with only the small loss of -0.39% on Monday.
On Friday, the North American equity markets were all strong: DJIA +258.30 +2.94% to 9034.69; S&P 500 +28.55 +3.16% to 931.80; NASDAQ Composite +55.18 +3.50% to 1632.21; Toronto Composite +246.41 +2.74% to 9234.11; and Venture Board +49.67 +6.23% to 846.69.
Earlier in the day, the European bourses were very strong as well: French CAC +4.09% to 3349.7; German DAX +3.39% to 4973.1; and UK FTSE +2.88% to 4561.8.
In Asia-Pacific equity markets, Tokyo and Shanghai remained closed but Hong Kong (+4.6% to 15042.8) was soaring, India was strong (+0.6%), and Australia dipped a bit (-0.1% to 3655.7).
In the forex market, (compared to pre-New Year’s close in brackets), the US Dollar was a tad stronger at 82.805 (82.15), while the Euro softened at 138.23 (139.21).
At the close of the week (compared to the prior week’s close), the spot prices for gold, palladium, platinum and silver were 874.98 (871.70), 187 (176), 938.5 (895.50), and 11.53 (10.53), respectively. On Friday, gold was the weakest precious metal due to the stronger $USD, but pall, plat and silver had plenty of strength, closing near highs for the week.
Crude Oil futures ($WTIC) gushed +$5.57/bbl on Wednesday and an additional +$1.74/bbl to close the week at 46.34. On Friday morning, crude had dipped to 41.77 at about 7:30am ET, so there was a strong run-up during the session.
DJIA futures closed the week at 8958, after being +43 at 7:40am ET to 8770. So, despite bad economic data during the day, trader psychology played a role as confidence moved up a gear.
Trading commentary from the CTAB squawk box:
We've talked about general parameters on the S&P, buying around 850 and selling as it neared 950. Up +3.16% for the session, the S&P finished at 931.8 nearing our profit taking objective. So, we are keeping an eye on the 7-day RSI in the Cara 100 list (see below).
The market acted very well again today, shaking off a bad economic release in the morning and closing on its high. It has done nothing wrong, and with the 89-day Moving Average and the November high both around 1000 further upside remains probable. A conservative bull could argue for 1150, which is the 50% retracement of the entire decline, and we have no problem with that prediction. However traders who make predictions tend to cloud their objectivity. So, it is best to let the market talk to us and when the indexes begin to tire, laboring to extend gains, it’s a good time to think about taking some or all of your chips off the table. You can always buy upside exposure if conditions change after that.
Volume was very light in the e-mini future Friday half of the normal daily volume, yet was still very high in USO and TBT lending support to a further rally in oil and a decline in US bonds.
We have been active in the energy market for a couple weeks because we know that fundamentals will dictate market prices sooner than later and usually sooner. But, for USO (35.63), we took some profits as it has rallied +31% since Xmas eve, and will look to add to positions on declines back to 32 and below that 30.55.
The VIX continued to fall extending its losses over the past month, now off -56% from the peak, meaning a lot of the easy money has been made for this particular rally phase. 4th quarter earnings will be released around the inauguration in late January and might prompt selling by nervous investors. Recall in 2002-2003 there was a double bottom over a 5-month time period so if selling emerges a test of the lows could happen sometime around Easter (early to mid-April).
That is looking forward perhaps a bit too much; the bottom line is that equity markets are lifting nicely, but as the indexes continue their ascent there are trailing stops, option hedges, or outright stock sales that should be made as objectives are met, or conditions change and momentum slows.
Have a great weekend.
