[8:14am ET] The market is caught in the dilemma of economic recession that government has tried to end by spending, but that spending required taking on more debt that now requires higher yields to attract new buyers. During mid-day Wednesday, yields broke out to higher levels, meaning bond prices started crashing, concerning equity traders to the point they started selling. Volume was light, but without bids, prices fell through the afternoon.
At the close, for only the sixth time in the past eight sessions, there were losses. In fact, the DJIA (8,300.02 -173.47 -2.05%), S&P 500 (893.06 -17.27 -1.90%) and NASDAQ Composite (1,731.08 -19.35 -1.11%) all closed down almost as much as the previous day’s gains.
The Toronto Composite (10,142.16 -143.74 -1.40%) and Toronto Venture Board (1,092.99 -4.17 -0.38%) closed lower as well, obviously concerned about a rising interest rate environment that at some point will hurt prospects for economic recovery.
In NY, the Healthcare (XLV) and Tech (XLK) sectors fared relatively best, but were both losers (-1.0% each). Basic Materials (XLB -3.8%), Industrial (XLI -3.3%), and Financial sectors (XLF -3.0%) were the biggest losers.
Among industry groups, REITs ($DJR -4.1%) and Banks ($BKX -3.8%) were weak, while Semi-conductors ($SOX +1.6%) was the only one that lifted and that was almost entirely due to SanDisk (SNDK +14.3%) soaring after announcing a business agreement with Samsung.
http://tinyurl.com/q9tber
The Cara 100 company stocks that lifted the most were SanDisk and Broadcom (BRCM +3.9%), while the losers were led south by Brunswick Corp (BC -6.1%).
With some hang-over to the nuclear events related to North Korea, and some media pumping concerns about possible nuclear war, the $USD lifted again (80.41 +0.28 +0.35%). So too did the British Pound (159.60 +0.29 +0.18%). The Yen closed lower (104.92 -0.37 -0.35%) as did the Cdn Loonie (89.10 -0.51 -0.57%). The Euro was hammered (138.26 -1.63 -1.17%), and that loss was extended through the night until a reversal early this morning seems to be happening (1.3872 07:03am ET),
Earlier today, equity prices were soft in most countries. Hong Kong and Shanghai were closed, but Japan’s Nikkei 225 (9,451.4 -0.13%), Aussie All Ordinaries (3,753.9 -1.09%), and India’s BSE 30 (14,296.0 -1.32%) all dropped, with the Indian market looking vulnerable after a huge run-up through Tuesday.
Later today in the European equity bourses, the French CAC (3,257.5 7:04AM ET -1.13%), German DAX (4,932.5 6:49AM ET -1.36%) and UK FTSE 100 (4,360.1 6:49AM ET -1.27%) were trading lower.
The US long Bond ($USB 116.69 -1.97 -1.66%) closed sharply lower. This is now five days of losses in six sessions. The rapidly lifting yields were as follows for 30-year (4.606 +1.60 +3.60%), 10-year (3.695 +2.02 +5.78%), and 5-year (2.394 +1.33 +5.88%). Treasury bill yields closed with a yield of 0.160 -0.05 -3.03%.
Bonds have sunk in price this past week as traders pondered the possible lowering of credit ratings of sovereign debt of the US and UK. The losers are those who are on pensions and fixed income. Their account statements at the end of this month and quarter will be shocking.
Crude Oil ($WTIC 63.45 +1.00 +1.60%) continued to strengthen, despite a stronger $USD. Earlier today, Oil futures were quiet (63.500 +0.050 +0.08% 07:02am ET).
$GOLD futures closed down a bit more (950.10 -2.00 -0.21%), but appear to be lifting this morning.
Spot (cash) market prices earlier this morning were as follows: Gold (952.33 +5.93 +0.63% 07:16am ET), Palladium (224 +2 +0.90% 07:08am ET), Platinum (1128.0 0.0 0.00% 07:14am ET), and Silver (14.88 +0.22 +1.50% 07:16am ET).
Stock futures for the DJIA (8323 +26 +0.31% 07:03 am ET) had a small positive bias based on hopes of improving housing market data.
CTAB trader’s conference call notes:
Prices oscillated back and forth Wednesday in a battle of black boxes, with the equity market ultimately giving back a great deal of the yesterday’s gain (S&P –1.90%). The technology sector led stocks higher in early morning trade, as Apple (AAPL +1.79%), and Research in Motion (RIMM +0.66%) again did the heavy lifting. Later, they were joined by select semiconductors (SMH +0.69%) like SanDisk (SNDK +14.58%), which rocketed higher after reaching a cross licensing agreement with Samsung.
While the US dollar was bid moderately higher (DXY +0.84%), US treasuries were pummeled (TLT –2.06%), yields hitting multi-month highs, threatening to squash consumer spending before it ramps up to pull the country out of its recession. Increased rates of borrowing are toxic to both the US and its citizens and lethal to the long-term vitality of the United States, a consideration we don’t think is factored into equity prices at S&P 900.
As we debated strategy on the desk yesterday, it became apparent: many differences of opinion are a result of different time horizons.
Since our inception, Cara Trading Advisors Bahamas has recommended being long gold and short US Treasuries, and while we believe this is a preferred long term strategy, we acknowledge there will be strong counter-trend reactions against the long-term trend, and managing money effectively requires reducing exposure after extended advances.
This afternoon we looked at the following RSI 7 values for various precious metal stocks:
Stock RSI-7: Daily Weekly Monthly
GLD..............70...61...61
SLV..............76...71...60
PAAS............88...74...54
GG...............87...71...53

With short-term momentum extended and severely over-bought, but room to move higher over a longer time horizon, should Bulls buy, sell, or hold? Your tactics should be consistent with the time frame you operate in.
Professional trader or individual investor, you need to ask yourself; am I a day trader, an intermediate time frame swing trader, or a long term investor? Strategy and tactics are substantially different for each time frame, as are your objectives.
Anyway, this was our dilemma yesterday morning; do we book profits, take partial profits, hedge our positions, or replace stock with calls (booking profits, yet still participating on the upside with less money at risk) given our fundamentally bullish long-term outlook on gold? Since each of us have well over 20 years experience trading our own money, needless to say we were not shy about expressing our opinion. But really it came down to each of us thinking in different time frames, something all traders grapple with many times during their career.
Trading is not for shrinking violets; tough decisions need to be made quickly and decisively, coming easily to those experienced and prepared. All of us are going to take losses; by managing risk properly, however, traders can earn consistent returns over time, eventually becoming extremely successful.
Once you have identified your time frame, realistic expectations of return on investment can be made.
Scalpers seek a return of +5%, earned over a short period of time; swing traders target a +10-20% return in 6 to 8 weeks, while long term investors may desire +25-50% year over year returns. Risk management techniques are different as well; scalpers use hourly charts for entry and stops, swing traders daily charts, longer term investors weekly and monthly charts.
If you believe prices are rising, use trailing stops, and let the winners run.
Easy, right?
