[9:59am ET] A very uninteresting session on Friday in New York; there was no follow-through at all in the impressive gains made on Thursday.
At the close, the S&P 500 (918.90 -1.36 -0.15%) and the DJIA (8,438.39 -34.01 -0.40%) were a little bit soft and the NASDAQ (1,838.22 +8.68 +0.47%) a little bit warm.
This was hardly a Kudlow goldilocks session, however. It was just plain dead.

Not Too Hot, Not Too Cold [Larry Kudlow]
The way some people in the mainstream media are talking about the stock market and economy these days, you'd think it was 1929 rather than 2007.This kind of extreme pessimism is unwarranted.
http://kudlow.nationalreview.com/post/?q=ZmFiNGZjOGYyMzFkN2MzYWZlYzVhNjU...
Looking back at Kudlow’s “professional” work, I’d say he really nailed it in late July 2007. The DJIA was 14,000 and the Kudlow ultra-short indicator worked to perfection. This one-time economist at the Fed Bank of NY, and former Associate Director for Economics and Planning in the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), his work was so good; he was later parachuted into CNBC, where you know the rest of the story. :-)
The Toronto Composite (10,389.76 +33.91 +0.33%) and the Toronto Venture Board (1,111.56 +8.51 +0.77%) were also lukewarm, completing a string of four winning sessions.
Earlier Friday, Austral-Asian markets were strong again to close the week with three wins. Japan’s Nikkei 225 (9,877.4 +0.83%), Hong Kong (18,600.3 +1.78%), Shanghai (2,928.2 +0.11%), Aussie All Ordinaries (3,899.5 +1.25%), and India’s BSE 30 (14,764.9 +2.92%) were all winners, apparently happy that the Great Reflation Trade is still on, or so they thought.
As for the European equity bourses, prices had been modestly higher, but closed the day with losses. The French CAC (3,129.73 Jun 26 -1.05%), German DAX (4,776.47 Jun 26 -0.50%) and UK FTSE 100 (4,241.01 Jun 26 -0.27%) closed the week almost unchanged.
In US trading on the final session of the week, no particular sectors or industries were remarkable. The Financials (XLF +0.5%) were up, and Consumer Discretionary (XLY -0.7%) and Energy (XLE -0.7%) were down, but signifying little.
The leading industry group was Computer Hardware ($HWI +2.5%), while Goldminers ($XAU -1.6%) returned some prior gains. $XAU from Tuesday through Thursday had gains of +4.1%, +2.9% and +4.1%, respectively, which was by far the best industry performer during that time.
The winners among Cara 100s were from Russia (Vimpel-Communications), India (HDFC Bank) and Brazil (Votorantim pulp and paper) with gains of VIP+7.5%, HDB+5.9% and VCP+5.2%. As for the losers, only Myriad Genetics really tumbled (MYGN-7.7%), on almost ten times average daily trading volume, which I think may have had something to do with Russell index rebalancing; and Peruvian goldminer Buenaventura (BVN-2.4%), which was part of the general malaise around goldminers on Friday.
The trade-weighted $USD index pulled back as end of the week economic news was not strong (79.83 -0.58 -0.72%). The Euro (140.57 +0.66 +0.47%), Pound (165.23 +1.52 +0.93%), Cdn Loonie (86.70 +0.09 +0.10%) and Yen (105.10 +0.88 +0.84%) all lifted against the US Dollar.
In bond market trading, the US long Bond had a win ($USB 118.53 +0.52 +0.44%), which was it’s 4th one in 5 sessions this week. The yields for 30-year (4.303 -0.26 -0.60%), 10-year (3.506 -0.40 -1.13%), and 5-year (2.533 -0.65 -2.50%) all dropped. Treasury bill yields lifted (0.175 +0.10 +6.06%) after falling for two sessions, remaining largely unchanged.
After three day of solid gains, $GOLD eked out a small one (939.90 +0.70 +0.07%). That resistance led to mild selling among the miners.
Crude Oil was weaker (69.16 -1.07 -1.52%).
The Euro futures closed the week (1.4075), which was a small gain W/W.
Spot gold, palladium, platinum and silver were a tad weaker on the day, but higher W/W, at: (938.80 -3.15 -0.33% 17:10pm ET); (243.5 +0.5 +0.21% 17:05pm ET); (1198.0 -1.0 -0.08% 16:49pm ET); and (14.06 -0.13 -0.92% 17:10pm ET), respectively.
US equity futures closed the week at 8373.
CTA trader’s conference call notes:
Extremely narrow range, very light volume (don’t be fooled by the final numbers; according to Briefing.com volume on the NYSE doubled in the last 3 minutes); and no directional movement.
To say it was dull and boring would be an understatement; a total waste of time. Most stocks barely budged as the Big Board (S&P -0.15%) and the Nasdaq (QQQQ + 0.16%) were almost mirror images of one another.
Large cap high beta stocks found plenty of bids; an easy way for managers to quickly boost upside exposure; Baidu (BIDU +2.68%), Google (GOOG +2.24%),Apple (AAPL +2.03%), Amazon (AMZN +1.99%), and Research in Motion (RIMM +1.98%) being the vehicles of choice.
Gold stocks briefly blipped up on the opening, only to turn tail and head lower, unable to capitalize on Thursday’s momentum (GDX – 1.88%). Fundamentals for precious metals remain compelling; any number of factors could set off a feeding frenzy to the upside. The charts look good.
Not much else to say; hopefully next week will be a bit more interesting.
Have a great weekend. If the weather holds up, there will be a Hawaiian Party on the beach today.
