May have already been posted, but the demographics, etc are particularly grim....excerpt ...
"Anything that can be sold for hard currency - wheat, rice, butane, diesel fuel and sugar - has disappeared from government warehouses during the past year, according to a multitude of reports in local Arab-language media summarized in my 2011 essays. (See When will Egypt go broke? Asia Times Online, July 12, 2011.)
It is not clear whether the localized shortages of food and the nationwide shortage of gasoline reflect a buyers' panic, or large-scale theft, or an effort by the central bank to conserve foreign exchange by slowing essential purchases - or all of the above.
Nearly half of Egyptians are functionally illiterate. Nine-tenths of adult women have suffered genital mutilation. Almost a third of Egyptians marry first or second cousins, the fail-safe indicator of a clan-based society. Half of Egyptians live on less than $2 a day, and must spend half of that on food."
Another roadblock to a strong recovery....from IBD
"The new regulatory regime, however, is a boon for lawyers and government workers.
A Government Accountability Office study this summer concluded that implementing Dodd-Frank rules would require 2,850 additional federal employees just through fiscal 2012 (which ends Sept. 30) — at a cost to taxpayers of $1.3 billion."
I think "Sugar the bitter truth" has been posted here some time ago, but it is an interesting and informative lecture on the problems with fructose if you have not seen it.
I saw the disparity in the PSLV, silver drop too, I own PSLV and took the hit. I have no idea, perhaps someone more savvy can help. FWIW,I ran a PSLV:SLV ratio through stock charts and tagged one or two of the recent times that the difference ratio was expanded to as large as today on the drop (ie may, Aug) and I saw a short term rally in PSLV following, so I am hoping history repeats. Maybe this will be helpful? I am still holding PSLV, but looking for a stop in case Vad's euro scenario 1 hits the fan soon.
You are right that I should have added some of my sources. Unfortunately, trading day time is precious. I have listed a few below. Some I remember I have not yet found, at least the one that triggered the “co-opt” thought did.
It is the u-tube Fox new piece suggesting potential corruption of the libertarian bent of “occupy” by people paying protesters, but I didn’t remember it was in Miami. There are claims however that some protesters are paid in Washington DC and New York and I have listed some below. They are, to me, much less credible sources than FOX, and then of course many question FOX‘s reliability. If you are one of these, then please ignore my comment. Unfortunately, I will not have time to look for the better sources today either.
I believe we are now seeing community organizing leaders being "parachuted in" to OWS from several sources,i.e. Public Unions who are desperate to grow taxes to pay their government union employees and their pensions, etc. etc. There have been some reports that pay ranges from $200 to $600 per week to protest for certain qualifications. OWS may be becoming as co-opted as anything else the protesters are protesting.
I agree on misunderstanding, Vad, I also see something like this along with inclusion of corporate, unless I am just misreading it:
"No person....etc.etc.....shall be allowed to contribute money, directly or indirectly, to any candidate for Federal office or to contribute money on behalf of or opposed to any type of campaign for Federal office."
I like to give money to my favorite candidate as a private individual. This is NOT my cup of tea!
We are seeing "community organizing" principles and applications at their best with the OWS and in its spread to other cities. This is especially true of the provation of authority and then run to the press to cry "they fouled my individual rights." The process worries me as does the rising control of it by those much more organized forces who want another form of economy or government, it is haunting. I've lived a long time and seen this before and it does not end well when it continues to grow. Egypt today should be a "tell", just check the news.
To get a clear idea of what is happening, I would like to learn more about who is getting permits and the funds for the private parks that the protesters camp in, several have admitted in interviews to being paid ($600/week?) and who sends in free food that is mentioned in some of the interviews with protesters? Heavey union and possible mid east involvement in supporting the day to day financing issues is only very occasionally mentioned by our press, but it maintains the ability of this crowd to stay in the cities. I do not think the organization of this protest was spontaneous at all. If there is this organized support, its existance should rise above hearsay.
Most of the U tube stuff with individuals has a "Party on" quality of the 60s and almost teenage outrage at having to use some sort of decency and behavior restraint. The police are scared and sometimes over react. I was there in the 60s so I guess it is all ones perspective as someone pointed out earlier.
When I see what is going on, I have to tell myself that after all, we have a community organizer in chief in the whitehouse. What is happening is his specialty. Is it a coincidence...or? On the ballence, I am more worried about the mentality that sows 2500 AK-47s along the US-Mexican border, however.
Great article,
I also can't get the following one out of my mind thinking about Egypt.

I found your comments interesting and informative, and look forward to any insights that will help to decipher and understand this market.

This should help some with the action today

Excellent, and it makes a critical point on point of view for some of today's discussions. For example...

..............but then it's only the Washington Post.
A conservative, but perhaps appropriate musical number as one trades today.
